HIGH SCHOOL
Nadia Mejia, Wilson Girls’ Cross Country
The Wilson Bruins advanced to the CIF State meet for the first time since 2002. Nadia Mejia led the way for Wilson, placing 13th with a season-best time of 16:58 to be the city’s top finisher in the DI finals.
Jah’Asharee Moore, Jordan Girls’ Basketball
Jah’Asharee Moore led the Jordan Panthers through the start of season. Moore score 29 points to go with 12 rebounds and eight steals in a close 51-48 win over Santa Fe Springs.
Quali Giran, Millikan Boys’ Basketball
The Millikan Rams have young firepower with Quali Giran joining the squad this year. The freshman put up some good numbers in Millikan’s opening contests, scoring 31 points against Sierra Canyon and 17 against Inglewood.
Ayaka Yiu, St. Anthony Girls’ Basketball
Ayaka Yiu wasted no time getting started with St. Anthony. The freshman scored a game-high 22 points with four 3pts to secure the Saints’ first win of the season vs. La Cañada.
COLLEGE
Amy Fritz, LBCC Women’s Water Polo
LBCC won their 10th straight South Coast Conference Championship with a dominant 21-6 win over Riverside, extending their win streak to 93 matches. Amy Fritz was a huge asset for the Vikings throughout the tournament, scoring three goals leading up to the championship game, where she netted four to help secure the title.
Joshua Grado, LBCC Men’s Soccer
Joshua Grado came up big for the LBCC Vikings as they started playoffs. Grado was named Player of the Match with an assist after LBCC secured a first-round playoff win in a 2-1 final score over Irvine Valley. In the second round vs. No. 1 ranked and top seed Santa Monica, Grado recorded an assist and scored a goal in the 4-2 win. Overall, he is the Vikings’ second leading in goals and assists through the season.
Rhiann Sheffie, LBSU Women’s Volleyball
Senior Rhiann Sheffie led the Beach to a four-set win over Hawai’i with a career night. Sheffie set a career high record with 15 kills on .480 hitting to go with her defensive best of six blocks.
