Compton Girls’ Basketball Preview

Compton has a fresh facility they’re ready to debut and use this winter. The Tarbabes had a historic run in flag football and are ready to bring that success to the basketball court.

They’ll look to do so with some strong athletes, including flag football star Ariel Willard. After making that deep playoff run on the flag football field, Willard is hungry for more of that success and knows the work she needs to put in to get there.

“We are looking for wins and hard dedication,” Willard said.

The Tarbabes will also have a few fresh faces joining them on the floor. With a few transfers and newcomers to the team, Willard said she is excited for her team to come together and show everyone who they are.

“When they get on court, it’s hard for everybody,” Willard said.

While the transfers still have to sit for their 30-day period, Willard said their presence will be notable once they hit the court. The offseason has already been going strong for Compton, so fans can expect to see good things out of the Tarbabes this year.

“It’s been great, practice has been good,” Willard said. “The transfers can shoot. They all can do their part.”

Ariel Willard is a multi-sport athlete for Compton, finishing up her flag football season and transitioning over to basketball.

As her team continues working on coming together, Willard is hoping to step up as a leader for Compton. In her case, she thinks her skills will be one of the most important factors in what she contributes to the squad.

“Just scoring, helping my team get better at the game, being a team player,” Willard said.

While Willard will look to the net in an attempt to bring her team up, she said the entire program is focused on offense as one of their strengths this season.

“Biggest thing right now is offense,” Willard said. “We move the ball fast, have a fast pace and we have shooters that can shoot and that can score and get to the bucket.”

After a 3-20 season last year, Willard is hoping this year’s squad can have more success on the court. However, she also knows this is something they have to work for. While they continue to sharpen their offense, Willard said the most important thing they need to have is confidence.

“If you have confidence, we can win, and if you play hard, we can win,” Willard said.

Compton kicks off their season tomorrow against Dorsey and have a good schedule before Moore League play begins. On Dec. 16, the Tarbabes will face the Wilson Bruins for their first league game of the season.

“We all just have people that do their part. I think we’re gonna be good this season,” Willard said.
