If the Long Beach State women’s volleyball team was looking for a marquee win, they don’t need to look any further than Saturday night.
The Beach pushed their win streak to eight and defeated Cal Poly, the reigning Big West champion, 25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 27-25 at the Walter Pyramid to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Logan King led Long Beach State with a career-high 21 kills and the Beach defense held Cal Poly to .176 and -.031 hitting percentages in the first and second sets, respectively. That allowed LBSU to get out to a big 2-0 lead.
“It feels nice,” King said of reaching a new career high. “I always think about what I have to improve on, so there’s definitely stuff there, but I’m going to try and think of the positive. I did get 21.”
It’s the first time since 2014 that the Beach has started conference play 4-0.
“I think it’s a statement,” Long Beach State coach Natalie Reagan said. “I think we continue to show up and do our job and play long Beach volleyball, and that’s a statement in itself. You know, all of that hype, it’s easy to wrap around it and get your head kind of caught in it, but it was really cool to watch the girls come off of a big win last night and reset the score zero zero and make sure that we still had that chip on our shoulder to play Long Beach volleyball.”
In the third set, Cal Poly showed why they’re the defending Big West champion as they hit a match at a match .378 rate and battled back when LBSU took a 24-23 lead and was looking for end the match.
However, Cal Poly scored three straight points to force a fourth set with a 26-24 win. In the fourth set, the Mustangs got out to a 2-0 lead – but King had two kills to even the match.
Both teams went back and forth throughout the set that featured 13 ties and seven lead changes.
After the Beach took a 19-16 lead late, Cal Poly responded with a 4-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. Elise Agi gave the Beach the lead with a kill to make it 21-20. Agi wasn’t done there after the Mustangs fought off two match points Agi got a kill to make it 25-24.
“I personally don’t really feel the pressure,” Agi said. “I just know that every single person has my back.”
Madi Maxwell had 3 assists and Agi had 14 kills.
The Beach (11-4, 4-0) finally took the match after kills by King and Hamaker. It was a big weekend for the Beach after they picked up a 3-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Friday. King and Sidney Hamaker led the Beach with 14 kills.
The opening set was a thriller, featuring 18 ties and five lead changes before Long Beach State edged out a 31-29 win, capitalizing on a late UCSB error after an Elise Agi kill set up set point. The Gauchos responded in the second, using a 7-2 run fueled by Eva Travis and Kiersten Schmitt to pull away for a 25-20 victory, evening the match at one set apiece.
In the third, UCSB jumped ahead 13-10 before the Beach surged back behind King and Madi Maxwell for a 5-0 run. After the Gauchos tied it at 23-23, Nieko Thomas delivered a clutch kill and UCSB committed an error to give Long Beach State the 25-23 edge. The Beach dominated the fourth set, breaking it open with a 9-0 serving run from Tatum Hoff en route to a 25-17 clincher.
The Beach now hits the road as they head to UC Riverside on Thursday before they head up north to take on UC Davis on Saturday.
