It’s been an exciting couple days for the Millikan flag football team.

After picking up their first win against Long Beach Poly, the Rams carried that momentum into Wednesday as they cruised to a 41-12 nonleague win against St. Anthony at DeHaven Stadium.

“We’re clicking at the right time,” Millikan coach Romeo Pellum said. “I think we’re getting better every week. We’re getting better every day, you know, and that’s, I mean, that’s what you want, you know what I mean? Especially right now, late in the season, and we’ll continue to get better.”

Senior Holly Ibarra has been the leader for the Rams offense and she continued to show off her field vision on the second drive of the game when she found fellow senior Nikki Cheshire for a touchdown to put Millikan up 6-0.

St. Anthony answered right back as the Saints drove down the field and Jordyn Washington got loose for a touchdown to tie the game 6-6 early in the second quarter.

That’s when Ibarra and the Rams offense got things going. On the next drive, Ibarra found Cheshire for a long gain and then found Charlie Enriquez for a 15-yard touchdown to put Millikan up 13-6.

Millikan’s defense was able to settle down and with a mix of pressure and outside contain, the Rams were able to bottle up Washington and force a punt.

Ibarra then found Enriquez three times on the next drive before finding Kate Martin who scored to put Millikan up 21-6.

The Rams defense wasn’t done there as Cass Mitchell came up with an interception to put Millikan’s offense right back on the field. On the first play of the drive, it looked like the Saints were going to come up with a big interception, but the ball was tipped and landed right in the hands of sophomore Sophia Romo who was standing in the end zone for a touchdown.

Washington led the Saints right down the field and scored to cut Millikan’s lead to 28-12. The Saints continued to get pressure to get the ball back, but on the next possession Enriquez picked off Washington in the end zone and took it all the way back for a touchdown.

Cheshire scored her second touchdown of the game as time expired to put the Rams up 41-12.

“Our chemistry’s great,” Cheshire said.
”We have a lot of younger girls and us older girls really take them in as little sisters and show them how to play flag football and that it’s all family out here. Those are our sisters and we really use our chemistry out on the field to just gel together and make plays.”

St. Anthony continues league play when they take on St. Mary’s Academy, while Millikan heads to Compton on Monday with a chance to take sole possession of first place.
