Standout Long Beach Poly defensive back and sprinter Donte Wright announced his college commitment over the Summer–the highly-touted recruit will continue his athletic career at Georgia. A rising junior, Wright has been ranked as a top-level recruit throughout his high school career and his recruitment has only picked up as his times have dropped in the Spring on the school’s track team.
Wright said that he committed after a recent recruiting trip to Georgia.
“I felt the love when I got there and the plan that the coaches have for me, I felt really comfortable with it,” he said. “It’s a commitment I feel really strongly about, I’m not thinking about any other schools.”
A 6-1 defensive back with length and speed, Wright is a four-star recruit on 247’s composite rankings, and is a top 100 recruit in the junior class, as well as the nation’s 12th-ranked defensive back nationally. He has scholarship offers from several major programs including USC, UCLA, Tennessee, Penn State, Michigan, and others.
He said he loved the fit as well as the reputation of the Bulldogs’ defense, which has turned out several top NFL players in recent years.
“I believe in my game, I believe that I’m a next-level player,” he said. “So why not go play with the best? Ultimately I’m trying to get to the league, so why not go play for a team that has the most NFL players?”
Wright said he loved the campus as well as the diversity in and around the university.
“There’s a lot of different kinds of people around, it’s beautiful out there, everyone that I met was really kind as well,” he said.
Wright has continued to improve as a sprinter, proving with measurable times that he’s a college-level athlete when it comes to speed. His personal-best time in the 100 is 10.69 seconds and in the 200 it’s 21.80. This year he ran on Poly’s nationally-lauded 4×100 team as well as finishing on the podium in the 100 and 200 at the Simi Valley Invitational and the Moore League Finals.
“Donte is a standout athlete on the field and on the track,” said Poly football coach Justin Utupo. “He has the mentality to take his performance to the next level.”
Wright said he’s excited for this upcoming junior season for the Jackrabbits, with high expectations that Poly will bounce back after a disappointing 2024 season.
“It’s going to be a big year for us,” he said. “We had a young team last year, but we’re all upperclassmen now and we’ve got to lead and come together as one so we can win this year.”
