There were plenty of bright spots for the Long Beach State women’s soccer team Thursday night, but the Beach will be left wanting more after a 1-1 tie against San Diego.
“I thought we did an excellent job of following the game plan,” Long Beach State coach Mauricio Ingrassia said. “We gave ourselves a lot of shots, a lot of stuff on goal. Finishing could have been a little bit better but you know that’s one very good performance.”
With similar size across the field, both teams took some type to get into their rhythm. Long Beach State (2-4-1) appeared to get into the right position in the 23rd minute when Logan Nidy bounced a shot off the cross bar and it landed behind the goal line.
However, with the close call the referee decided to go to review and after a lengthy 10-minute review – the official reversed the call and the game remained scoreless.
“He said there was no goal,” Ingrassia said. “That it didn’t cross the line.”
Nidy’s shot was the lone close opportunity in the first half as the Beach went to the break in a scoreless tie with the Toreros. In the second half, the Beach put the petal to the metal as they outshot SD 11-3.
Those chances finally paid off as Cherrie Cox found herself in the right place as she crashed to the ball on a shot that bounced off the crossbar to give LBSU a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute.
“Our team got robbed from the first goal,” Cox said about following her teammates’ shots. “We can’t let it happen again. So, at least someone had to get one.”
That lead didn’t last as San Diego’s Josefine Schlichting took advantage of a lapse on defense and scored the equalizer in the 76th minute as she followed her own teammate’s shot and delivered.
LBSU had a few more opportunities as Natelle El Mokbel but nothing connected as the Beach had to settle for the tie.
While the Beach didn’t get the results they wanted, they did get an opportunity to see some film on the rest of the Big West before their match up against San Diego as the Toreros have spent their entire start to the season playing almost every team in the Big West.
LBSU will be back in action to close out non-conference play against New Mexico State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
