Football: Compton Offense Stalls In Loss Vs. Paramount

After a blistering fast start to their season, the Compton football team hit its first road bump of the season as they lost 7-3 to Paramount Friday night.

The Compton offense that rushed for 600 yards over the first two games was stymied by the Pirates as they finished with 98 yards and no touchdowns.

“We got to be more disciplined,” Compton assistant coach Lamont Freeman said. They knew our plays, and we knew we wanted to do. We don’t have all our guys, but it’s still not an excuse. I think we’re better than that team, we just not disciplined.”

It was clear from Compton’s opening drive that the Pirates (2-1) came in with a game plan to load the box and bottle up Nate Willard and Trevon fair. Paramount did exactly that with two tackles for loss forcing a punt.

While the offense got off to a slow start, Compton’s defense continued with their ferocious pace to start the year and after a flag kept a Paramount drive alive, the Tarbabes forced a turnover on downs at  the 11-yard line.

Willard got right back into the mix as he got loose for a 23-yard gain on his second carry of the game. Fair then connected with Ronnie Mixon on a 37-yard card to put Compton inside Paramount’s 15.

The Pirates (3-0) got a big tackle for loss and Compton settled for a 32-yard field from David Silva Ochoa connected from 32 yards out to give the Tarbabes a 3-0 lead with 9:59 left in the first half.

The Paramount offense got going as Zechariah Moreno gets loose for a 30-yard run and after two flags including a pass interference call – the Pirates were inside the 5 and Dae’jon Massey scored the lone touchdown of the night with a 1-yard plunge to take a 7-3 lead with 5:57 left in the first half.

Compton’s defense continued to play big as they forced a turnover on downs on the opening drive of the first half. But, much like the first half, Compton’s offense stalled at the Paramount 19 after turning the ball over on downs.

The Tarbabes’ defense was up for the challenge as Ronnie Mixon came up with his first of two interceptions that gave the ball right back to the offense.

With Willard and Fair leading the charge, Compton went on their longest drive of the night drive 12-play, 60-yard drive that last nearly 12 minutes – however, a fumble stalled the drive and Paramount recovered the ball to head the other way.

However, like he did all night Mixon comes up with another interception and Compton has the ball right back with a chance to take a lead with 6:17 left in the game.

“We just need to really come together and play as one,” Mixon said.

Starting at midfield, Compton got the ball looking to drive down and take a lead, after driving to the Paramount 17 – the Tarbabes turned the ball over after Willard was stopped short of a first down on fourth down.

Compton will be back in action next week when they continue their home stint against Dorsey.
