Cabrillo boys’ water polo coach Lawrence Durand has his Jaguars in rebuild mode this year with a young and inexperienced roster, but will rely on a core group of five seniors.
Jorge Pasten will be in the goal for the Jags after previously working behind older teammates. Elijah Mejia will be at the center position while Gary Romero will play center defense. Durand expects Tony Rizo to lead the way in scoring alongside Allen LittleJohn, and says that he has high expectations for all of the five seniors.
The Jags will have three new varsity members—Santiago Gonzalez, Adrian Marin, and Ben Caro—who Durand says have made major strides. Adrian Guevara will also step up as just a freshman.
Durand is looking forward to battling for a postseason spot during league play and hopes to potentially make a deep run in the playoffs. The Jags finished 11-9 last season and 2-3 in the Moore League, finishing in fourth.
The Jaguars will no longer host the Moore League showcase—an event previously held at Cabrillo each year as the league opener for every team. Despite the decision by coaches to discontinue it, Durand hopes to bring the event back in some capacity.
