The562’s coverage of Long Beach Wilson Athletics is sponsored by Joel Bitonio, Class of 2009.
The message at Wilson this week is to continue playing disciplined football.
The Bruins aren’t patting themselves on the back after a dominating 35-0 over Portola last week but are using that as fuel to continue to get better.
“It’s about staying grounded after a win like that,” Wilson coach Raudric Curtis said. “Understanding how much development still is required for us to reach our peak.”
Wilson (1-0) will be back on the road in Huntington Beach to take on Marina who is coming off a 13-7 win over Foothill last week. Marina was the first-place team out of the Lambda League last year before losing in the first round of the CIF Division 7 playoffs.
Marina (1-0) leaned heavily on their ground attack against Foothill with senior QB Francis Saporita passing for 126 while combining for 218 yards on the ground with junior Ben Ramos.
“Their QB is what makes their team go,” Curtis said. “He gives them confidence even through adversity. He can make plays when there is really nothing there with his feet and he throws well enough to kind of keep you off balance.”
The Bruins will look to continue to be balanced on offense after senior Mack Cooper threw for 159 yards and senior Kori Scott had 16 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns.
Wilson will look to establish the run game to combat Marina strong front seven.
Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
