Long Beach State Alums Win National Senior Games Championship

A pair of Long Beach State Hall of Famers are still winning championships nearly four decades after suiting up for the Beach.

Margaret Mohr and Kirsten Cummings, both women’s basketball players at LBSU in the 1980s, were part of a national championship in Des Moines last week at the National Senior Games’ 2025 championships. Competing with the San Diego Avalanche, the duo were a big part of the Avalanche’s win in the 60+ age division.

The National Senior Games have existed in some form since the mid-1980s, with the goal of promoting healthy lifestyles for seniors through education, fitness, and sport. The organization has hosted 19 national championships since then, including last week’s event in Iowa. More than 20 sports are contested in the biennial competition, which bills itself as the largest multi-sport event in the world for seniors. Teams have to qualify through state tournaments to make it to the national championship tournament.

Mohr and Cummings are well-known to any longtime fans of Long Beach State women’s hoops. Cummings, a 1990 LBSU Hall of Fame inductee, was referred to at her induction as one of the university’s most inspirational athletes ever. Born with a hearing impairment, Cummings was a two-time All-American for the 49ers and was a member of the University Games silver medal-winning American squad in 1985. She played professionally in Italy after graduating.

Mohr, who was inducted to the LBSU Hall of Fame in 2011, was the team’s point guard during their first Final Four run in 1986-87. She started all 36 games that season, leading the Beach to a 33-3 finish and a No. 4 national rankings. Mohr has since gone on to a successful coaching career.

Led by the two LBSU legends, the Avalanche made a dominant run through the NSG competition. After winning their first game 33-32 they won every other game by double digits, including a 41-29 win in the national championship over a team from Tennessee.
