HIGH SCHOOL

Ki’ele Ho-Ching, Long Beach Poly Softball

Long Beach Poly star junior Ki’ele Ho-Ching had a big game in the CIF-SS championship for the Jackrabbits. The Oklahoma commit went 2/3 with 3 RBIs, two runs, and inside the park homerun, and an intentional walk.

Jillene Wetteland, Long Beach Poly Track and Field

Long Beach Poly senior Jill Wetteland claimed the state championship in the high jump with a clearance of 5-7. The Harvard signee ends her decorated prep career with an individual state championship.

Wyland Obando, Wilson Track and Field

It was a busy day for the junior sensation Wyland Obando. He ran the 800, the 4×800, and the 4×400 at the CIF State meet, claiming an individual state title in the 800 with a 1:51.24 that saw him storm back from fifth to first in the final 100m.

Loren Webster, Wilson Track and Field

Wilson senior Loren Webster had her best jump of her life at the CIF State meet, soaring to 21-0.25 to claim an individual long jump state championship. The Oregon signee hadn’t crossed 20 feet yet this year, but saved her best jump for the last of her decorated career.

An LBC native, Mike Guardabascio has been covering Long Beach sports professionally for 13 years, with his work published in dozens of Southern California magazines and newspapers. He's won numerous awards for his writing as well as the CIF Southern Section’s Champion For Character Award, and is the author of three books about Long Beach history.
