With city bragging rights on the line, Keller Middle School walked away with a 4-1 victory over Stanford Middle school on Tuesday afternoon to claim the LBUSD boys’ middle school division 1 soccer title at Long Beach City College.
“We know this team is so powerful,” Keller coach Ken Weber said. “But a lot of times, teams surprise us. We’ve had a lot of close games and we’ve gotten good practice and we learned how to pull ahead in those close games.”
The game had everything you’d expect from the top ranked team in division one as top-ranked Keller wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead after Isaiah Ruan found the back of the net in the second minute of the game.
But, Stanford answered right back after Dallas Ferguson scored in the 13th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
From that moment on, Keller’s Jonathan Carreras left his mark on the match as he scored in the 27th minute to give the Lobos a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Carreras then kicked off the second half with an assist to teammate Diego Fula Coba to put the Lobos up 3-1 and then completed the brace when he scored again to extend the lead to 4-1.
