Welcome back to this week’s The562.org Athletes of the Week.

HIGH SCHOOL

Eddie Gaxiola, Lakewood Baseball

Sophomore Eddie Gaxiola had a day to remember for Lakewood last week in a must-win Moore League contest against Poly. Gaxiola went 4-for-4 and hit a walkoff shot into the outfield to drive in the game-winning run in a 2-1 Lancers victory.

Joey Vega, Wilson Softball

Wilson senior pitcher Joey Vega led her Bruins to a 10-0 win over Poly on senior day last week, keeping the Bruins in first place in the Moore League. Vega struck out six consecutive batters at one point and finished with eight strikeouts while scattering three hits in a complete-game shutout. She also had a hit and scored three runs.

COLLEGE

Sasha Karelov, LBSU Beach Volleyball

Senior Sasha Karelov and partner Nele Barber made it to the Big West Pairs championship match in Hawaii last weekend, but fell in three sets. The duo also helped spark a pair of upsets of No. 5 Cal Poly in the team competition. The Pairs Tournament semifinal win was Karelov’s 29thof the season, setting a new single-season record.

Jessica Flores, LBSU Softball

Flores delivered a series victory for the 49ers over Cal Poly as she pitched her first career no-hitter in a 1-0 Long Beach State win. Flores allowed just three base-runners on two walks and an error in seven innings. She also scored the game’s only run when she was driven home by Nichole Fry.
