The562.org’s Athletes Of The Week

Congratulations to all of this week’s winners and thanks to Naples Rib Company for their sponsorship.

Julian Aguiar, Millikan Baseball

The Long Beach State commit was outstanding for Millikan last week in an 11-1 win over Lakewood. Aguiar was throwing low-90s throughout the game as he held the Lancers to one run and struck out seven through 5.1 innings pitched, scattering five hits.

Chris Murphy, Long Beach Poly Baseball

Long Beach Poly played two baseball games last week, and senior shortstop Chris Murphy was the difference in both of them. Murphy tripled in the seventh and scored the game-tying run, then singled in the game-winning run in the 11th. Then in a 2-0 win over Wilson, Murphy’s single to left field brought in the game-winning run.

Kendall Lundberg, Lakewood Softball

Lakewood catcher Kendall Lundberg comes from a Lakewood family, and she’s writing her own legacy this year. In a narrow win over Moore League rival Millikan, Lundberg picked off two runners at second base, and drove in the deciding run in a walkoff win.

Rachel Rubio, Millikan Softball

Senior Rachel Rubio has been powering a nice start to the season for the Rams that included a 4-2 performance at the Tournament of Champions in Arizona, where she pitched a complete game in a win over Mater Dei. Rubio pitched a complete game against Lakewood in a narrow loss last week, then pitched a complete game shutout against Wilson with only three hits allowed and eight strikeouts on Friday.

Kyle Paulson, Millikan Volleyball

Millikan junior Kyle Paulson lifted the Rams in a five-set thriller against Lakewood last week. Paulson impacted every aspect of the match, as he put up 18 assists as a setter, 11 kills as a hitter, five blocks, and four aces.

Everett Steward, Long Beach Poly Track

Long Beach Poly junior Everett Steward has burst onto the California high school track and field scene in a big way. Two weeks ago, Steward ran the state’s fastest 800m time of the year with a 1:54.84. Last weekend at Wilson’s California Relays, he added the state’s second-fastest 400 time with a run of 48.20.
