Moore League Boys’ Soccer: Cabrillo Wins, Jordan And Poly Draw

The first week of Moore League boys’ soccer is over after a few surprising results.

Cabrillo 2, Lakewood 0

The Jaguars (10-0-2, 1-0-0) opened league play with a shutout victory at home. Senior Brayan Valenzuela (21’) and sophomore Arnold Giron (42’) took advantage of Lakewood miscues to score both goals, while the Jaguars outshot the Lancers 18-7.

“We’ve had several games like this,” Cabrillo coach Pat Noyes said. “We get a lot of chances and we just have to make sure we’re defending together, and I think we do a really good job of staying together in the back and defending with more numbers than teams have against us.

Cabrillo senior goalkeeper Yancy Monterola made four saves for the Jaguars’ eighth clean sheet in the last nine games. Cabrillo only allowed six goals this season.

Lakewood sophomore goalkeeper Lewis Blanton made three great saves in the first six minutes of the game, and finished with seven saves, but he and his back line misplayed the ball on both goals. He was replaced by junior Raul Gutierrez, who made three saves in about 35 minutes of action.

“This has been going on for awhile where our goalkeepers make good saves, and then they make one mistake and its costs us a game,” Lakewood coach Alex Diaz said. “It’s been going on this whole year. It gets to a point where we as a coaching staff get tired of the same mistakes, and we just have to make a change.”

Lakewood (3-4-1, 0-2-0) hosts Millikan on Monday, while Cabrillo travels to Compton.

Long Beach Poly 2, Jordan 2

Poly (5-1-3, 1-0-1) scored a late penalty kick to grab a share of the points at Jordan. Both teams scored once in each half. Julian Pearce put Poly on the board in the first half off of a throw-in from Ben Garza, and Miguel Arroyo scored the equalizing PK in the final minute. Jordan (1-2-3, 0-0-2) got its goals from Ramiro Reyes and Octavio Salazar.

Jordan visits Wilson on Monday, and Poly doesn’t play against until Wednesday against Compton.
