Volleyball: Lakewood Sweeps Wilson On Senior Night

Lakewood continued to keep pace as the second-place team in the Moore League on Thursday afternoon, defeating an upset-minded Wilson team in a sweep, 25-20, 25-17, 25-18. The victory means the Lancers still have just one loss in league, to Long Beach Poly; the two teams will meet again in what is shaping up to be the league championship battle everyone expected, at Lakewood on Tuesday, October 9th.

“It’s great to recognize our seniors, we have some incredible kids who’ve been big parts of our program,” said Lakewood coach Mike Wadley.

Cal State Fullerton commit Julia Crawford had 20 kills in the match, while setter Moni Vivao had 35 assists, 16 digs and five kills. Zyaire Garrit had 15 digs to lead the team defensively.

The Bruins came in hungry and jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first set, and led 18-16 late. An injury to Gabby Sonnhalter (who rolled her ankle on someone’s foot under the net) took the wind out of their sales a little, and the Lancers ended up closing the first set on a 9-2 run to take the frame.

“She’s proven herself to be one of the best players in the league, I know that hurt them,” said Wadley.

After surviving that push from Wilson and settling down some Senior Night jitters, Lakewood was in control the rest of the way, leading 19-9 in the second set and 20-9 in the third.

Wilson was led by 19 digs from Presley Parker and another strong all-around performance from Risa Sena, who had 10 kills and nine digs.
