Long Beach State Dirtbags Edged In Extra Innings

FROM LBSU REPORTS

Tuesday brought the first extra-inning game of the season for both Long Beach State (8-13) and LMU (10-10) and it was the host Lions that came away victorious with a 5-4 walk-off win in 10 innings. The Lions scored the winning run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to win their seventh game in a row.

The Dirtbags got good production from the bottom of the lineup as the last four hitters in the order had five of LBSU’s six hits on the night, plus all four RBIs and three runs scored. Domenic Colacchio was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI double. Shaq Robinson had a pair of RBIs via a sacrifice fly and a single.

LMU took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the first inning, but LBSU immediately responded with two runs in the second, on Robinson’s sac fly and an opposite field RBI single from Santino Rivera. After LMU tied the game in the fourth, the Dirtbags took the lead back with two more runs in the sixth. After Brooks Stotler walked and stole second, Colacchio ripped a double off the left field wall to put LBSU on top. Two batters later, Robinson lined a single to left field to score Colacchio and make it 4-2 Dirtbags.

The LMU offense was just too relentless, piling up 15 hits on the night and eventually getting to the Dirtbags bullpen for two runs in the eighth, plus the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th.

Long Beach State will remain on the road this weekend, visiting rivals Cal State Fullerton for a non-conference series. Game one at Goodwin Field in Fullerton is set for a 7 p.m. first pitch on Friday.
